The International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission (IUCN SSC) is a science-based network of more than 7,500 volunteer experts, all working together towards achieving the vision of “A world that values and conserves present levels of biodiversity.” IUCN SSC’s major role is to provide scientific advice and information to IUCN, conservation organisations and government agencies on biodiversity conservation, the inherent value of species, their role in ecosystem health and functioning, the provision of ecosystem services, and their support to human livelihoods.

The FFSG also works in conjunction with the Freshwater Biodiversity Unit, part of the IUCN Global Species Programme, on regional and global freshwater assessments, IUCN Red List species assessments, developing new conservation initiatives and joint fundraising efforts.
